I found this series some years ago and just recently re-read the whole series. It’s jam packed with fantasy, adventure, magic, and some romance.
The 5 books follow Kendra and Seth Sorenson, two normal siblings, as they meet magic at Fablehaven, a secret magical preserve at which their Grandma and Grandpa Sorenson caretake. The two kids find fairies, minotaurs, satyrs, naiads, witches, and dragons.
They both begin to make magical friends and grow in confidence. Kendra becomes fairykind and respected by all fairies. Seth becomes a shadow charmer and talks to demons.
There are secret preserves all over the world holding artifacts which are the key to the Demon prison. The last book has Seth and Kendra (and friends) defeating and trapping the demons.
If you loved the books, you’ll be glad to know that a Brandon Mull is writing a sequel series. Dragonwatch book 1 is out. Book 2 is coming out sometime in 2018.
What I think…
- Kendra is 14 in book 1. Her crushes on first a dragon, then a unicorn are mentioned.
- Seth is a goofy kid who is 11 or 12 in book 1. He does make stupid and dumb mistakes but is truly honest and loyal.
- There is definitely an evil vs. good conflict going on in here in which good wins.
- Magic, fantasy, and other worldly powers are a main theme.
I enjoy fantasy and adventure themed books with a shot of romance. If you like magic, don’t read this! If you like hair-raising fun, don’t read this! (just kidding!)
The story is very appropriate. It does not malign God or have strange stuff (i.e. supporting LGBTQ, unneeded violence…) in it. However, it clearly shows that people rely on magic and other powers (demons, unicorns…) I think that the writing is good but not the best.
